24ct gold price per gram today

R2 248,33 /gram

24ct gold is R2 248,33 per gram in South Africa at 11 Sept 2026, 06:13 SAST. Twenty-four-carat gold is fine gold: 99.9% pure, stamped 999, with essentially nothing else in it. It is the reference every other karat is priced against, because each lower karat is simply this number multiplied by its purity. It is also the form gold is stored in rather than worn, since pure gold is far too soft to hold a stone or survive a day on a hand.

The number every other karat is derived from

Every figure on this site starts here. Nine-carat is this price times 0.375, eighteen-carat is this price times 0.75, and so on down the scale. If you understand the 24ct per-gram number, you can price any piece of gold you will ever own with a calculator and a scale, which is the entire point of publishing it.

One distinction is worth holding onto, because it trips people up and it once tripped us up too. The pure gold price and the 99.9% fine gold price are not quite the same number: fine gold is 99.9% of pure, a difference of about a tenth of a percent. It is small, but on a kilogram it is real money, and mixing the two is how published gold figures quietly stop reconciling with each other.

Why you do not wear it

Pure gold is soft enough to mark with a fingernail. A 24ct ring would deform in normal wear and could not hold a stone securely, which is why jewellery is alloyed down to 22ct at the highest and usually much further. Where you will meet 24ct is in bullion: bars, and the fine gold that Krugerrand blanks are made from before copper is added to bring the finished coin to 22ct.

How this number is worked out

Every karat on this site is the pure gold price multiplied by that karat's legal purity, and nothing else. Pure gold is R2 250,58 a gram at 11 Sept 2026, 06:13 SAST, so 24ct at 99.9% comes to R2 248,33. That is an ounce at R69 931 and a kilogram at R2 248 334. You can reproduce all of it with a calculator, which is the point: see the methodology, take the numbers from our public price feed, or run any weight through the calculator.

The metal value is not the payout. A buyer pays a percentage of it, and that percentage is the only thing worth shopping around. Our study of 4 295 reviews across 34 South African gold buyers found the disputes are almost never about the advertised rate.

Common questions

24ct gold, answered

What is 24ct gold worth per gram in South Africa?
It is the fine gold price, which is the headline number on this site and moves with the international gold price and the rand together. Every other karat is a fixed fraction of it, so this is the figure to check first.
What is 999 gold?
999 is the hallmark for 24ct fine gold: 999 parts pure gold per thousand, or 99.9%. You will see it on bullion bars rather than on jewellery, because gold this pure is too soft to wear.
Is 24k gold pure gold?
Effectively yes, though "pure" and "99.9% fine" are not identical. 24ct is refined to 99.9% or better. That last tenth of a percent is small but it is not nothing, and it is the reason a fine-gold figure and a pure-gold figure differ slightly.
Why is my 24ct jewellery bending?
Because pure gold is genuinely soft. That is not a defect or a sign it is fake, it is the property that makes 24ct unsuitable for rings and settings and is why almost all wearable jewellery is alloyed down to 22ct or lower.
