South Africa is a nine-carat country

Walk into most South African jewellers and the default is 9ct, stamped 375 for 37.5% gold. It is the everyday standard here for a simple reason: at just over a third pure gold, a 9ct piece costs a fraction of the same design in 18ct, while still being legally gold and hallmarked. That affordability is also the catch when you come to sell. Because only 37.5% of the weight is gold, the metal value, and the payout a buyer offers, is proportionally lower than the higher karats.

The per-gram figure is the honest anchor. At R843,97 a gram, a typical 4g wedding band carries about R3 376 of gold and a 10g chain about R8 440. That is the metal floor. What a buyer pays is a percentage of it, usually 70 to 90 percent for scrap, which is the whole game when you sell.

9ct against the other karats

Value is weight times purity, nothing more. An 18ct piece is worth twice as much per gram as 9ct because it is twice as pure, R1 687,94 against R843,97. But a heavy 9ct chain can still be worth more than a dainty 18ct one, because the heavier weight makes up for the lower purity. Never judge a piece on its karat stamp alone; weigh it, then multiply. The full per-gram board carries every karat, and the calculator does the arithmetic for any weight.

Common questions

9ct gold, answered

Is 9k the same as 9ct, and what is 375 gold?
All three mean the same thing. "K" and "ct" are both short for carat, and 375 is the hallmark: 375 parts of pure gold per thousand, or 37.5%. A piece stamped 9K, 9ct or 375 has identical gold content, whichever way the maker chose to mark it.
What is the 9ct gold price per gram in South Africa today?
9ct gold is R843,97 per gram at 11 Sept 2026, 06:13 SAST. It is 37.5% pure gold and the rest is alloy, so it carries 37.5% of the value of pure gold, gram for gram.
Why is most South African jewellery 9ct?
Nine-carat is the everyday standard in South Africa because it holds far less gold, 37.5% against 75% for 18ct, so a piece costs much less while still being legally and hallmark-stamped as gold. The trade-off is that its metal value, and what a buyer will pay for it, is proportionally lower.
How much is my 9ct gold worth?
Weigh it in grams and multiply by R843,97. A 10g 9ct chain holds 3.75g of pure gold and is worth R8 440 in metal; a buyer typically pays 70 to 90 percent of that. Use the calculator for any weight.
Is 9ct gold worth more than 18ct?
No, gram for gram 18ct is worth twice as much because it is twice as pure (75% versus 37.5%). 18ct is R1 687,94 per gram today against R843,97 for 9ct. A heavy 9ct piece can still out-value a light 18ct one, because value is weight times purity.
